The Purple Martin Neighborhood Project could not happen without the generous support of neighbors and Bexar Audubon Society. Funds go towards maintenance and repairs of existing housing as well as purchasing of additional housing to expand colonies.
2023 Update
Thanks to another generous grant from Bexar Audubon Society and generous neighbors we will be making the following upgrades this year! We will be replacing existing aluminum houses at the Alamo Heights Community Garden with a new Cedar T-14 Purple Martin Super Combo System. The cedar house is ideal housing, in my opinion, for our birds in South Texas. The cedar houses provide 6.5" x 11" compartments which provide wonderful protection from flying predators such as owls and hawks and the cedar wood stays cool even on the hottest days reducing the probability of fledglings jumping prematurely because of conditions inside the nesting cavity that are too hot. All gourd caps will be replaced with vented caps to help cool down temperatures inside the gourds. Additional gourds will be hung from the house on Viesca at the Nature Trails. We finally attracted 2 nesting pair in 2022 so we hope to expand this colony in 2023. Shout out to city of Alamo Heights for relocating the house for us, you will notice that it is now in the middle of the lot and further away from all the trees so that the Purple Martins can easily swoop into their compartments.
If you would like to help us continue to care for the birds, please consider giving to our cause!
Established in 2019 through generous donations, this colony is thriving. The existing housing was donated and moved to the Headwaters Sanctuary and funds received through Bexar Audubon's Community Grant Program were used to purchase a bigger gourd rack.
Brand new in 2021 and the Martins took to it the same year!!! This Troyer Gourd features 6 vertical gourds and 6 horizontal gourds. This gourd rack is located on Edsel Parkway across from the Terrell Hills Playground.
After many years of neglect we took over managing the two Purple Martin houses in Alamo Heights at the Nature Trails and AHLL Fields. 2022 finally was the year we attracted two nesting pairs of Martins. While only one nest had viable eggs, we now know that they will be back again next year and hopefully will bring more friends. The addition of four (4) Troyer Gourds to the bottom of the T-14 helped attract our new residents.
This Purple Martin House is by the Alamo Heights Little League fields and had two nesting pair in 2020. 2021 was amazing with 10 nesting pair! In 2022 both houses in Alamo Heights were taken down, repaired and repainted. We also added 8 gourds to the existing housing. The Martins loved the extra space. This house was at full capacity during 2022.
Thanks to a generous grant from Bexar Audubon Society the Alamo Heights Community Garden upgraded their existing housing to a beautiful T-14 Cedar House with gourds! Beside looking amazing there are so many great things about this house. The cedar construction is not only durable but will keep cool even on the hottest of days. The additional exterior gourds will entice even more Purple Martins to come nest.
